Analysis of quality problems of alloy aluminum slab


It is reported that the continuous casting and rolling of aluminum alloy slab has the characteristics of compact solidification structure, small center porosity, slight center segregation, fine columnar crystals, small secondary dendrite arm spacing and small head-tail temperature difference. Therefore, theoretically speaking, continuous casting and rolling has certain advantages in producing thin aluminum plates, but this process also has the problems of low surface quality of slabs and small application scope of products:


First, the surface quality:

For aluminum slab continuous casting and rolling, the surface quality is one of the main factors affecting its quality grade. The common defects in production are surface slag inclusion, surface longitudinal cracks, etc. For aluminum slab, due to its thin thickness, large width-to-thickness ratio and large surface area, a large amount of mold flux is needed.

If the mold flux is not selected properly, some mold fluxes with higher melting point will not melt, which may lead to smaller opening of the mold with slag, smaller melting space for solid slag, and increase the turbulence of the liquid surface, which is easy to involve the mold flux into the longitudinal cracks of the aluminum alloy slab. On the one hand, it is related to various stresses on the shell surface of the solidified slab, for example, the thermal stress caused by the temperature difference in the initial slab shell in the mold, the static pressure of molten aluminum, Static pressure is related to dynamic friction caused by shrinkage stress of solidified shell, bending stress caused by liquid level fluctuation, and tensile stress during continuous casting. On the other hand, the formation of longitudinal cracks in aluminum slab is related to solidification structure of slab, which is usually under the slab skin during continuous casting of aluminum slab.

Because of the high solidification speed, impurity elements solidify before precipitation, and when the solidification front advances to the columnar crystal region, impurity elements are enriched and precipitated, which reduces the melting point of this region and forms a low plastic region. Under the action of small external force, it will also become a crack source and then develop into a subcutaneous crack, which will extend to the slab surface to form a fine longitudinal crack defect, and the longitudinal crack begins with dendrite. It ends between columnar crystals and dendrites, and the alumina scale of aluminum slab that expands along the growth direction of dendrites is very thin and sticky on the surface of slab. It is difficult to clean the alumina skin, so the surface quality of tropical zone produced by aluminum slab has always been a big problem.


Second, the product range:

Although the continuous casting and rolling production line of alloy aluminum slab can cover most varieties of hot rolled strip aluminum, some varieties with high performance requirements and high added value cannot be produced yet. Continuous casting and rolling of aluminum slab can well control the aluminum nitride precipitated in the rolling process, which is beneficial to the production of deep drawing sheet, but the surface quality of aluminum slab produced by continuous casting and rolling is poor, which is unfavorable to the production of deep drawing sheet.
