The silver atom attracts visible light, and when the silver atoms gather to a certain amount, the bright part of the light emitted on the glass is absorbed, and the originally colorless and transparent glass will turn gray and black. When the discolored glass is placed in the dark, under the catalytic action of copper oxide, silver atoms and bromine atoms will be combined into silver bromide (Ag+Br==AgBr), because silver ions do not absorb visible light, so the glass will become colorless and transparent. This is the basic principle of color-changing glass.

Use of discolored glass

Using color-changing glass to make window glass can make the light through the hot sun become soft and cool. Color-changing glass can also be used to make solar lenses. In general, photochromic glass is produced by introducing photosensitizers into ordinary glass components. Commonly used ordinary glass are aluminum borosilicate glass, borosilicate glass, borate glass, phosphate glass, etc. Commonly used photosensitizers include silver halide, copper halide and so on. Usually, the photosensitizer is uniformly dispersed in the glass in a microcrystalline state, which decomposes under sunlight and reduces the light transmittance of the glass. When the glass is in the dark, the photosensitizer recombines to restore transparency. The coloring and fading of glass are reversible and permanent. The sunlight intensity is high, the color of the glass is deep, and the light transmittance is low. On the contrary, the sunshine intensity is low, the color of the glass is light, and the light transmittance is high.
